Oscar Murillo – Flight Drawings (2023)
Site-Specific Installation | Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin

As part of the exhibition O Quilombismo, artist Oscar Murillo presents Flight Drawings, a captivating installation featuring suspended forms crafted from organic, rock-like clusters, metal structures, and Murano glass. Installed throughout the auditorium of Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin, the work explores themes of flight and its complex symbolism: touching on nationhood, geopolitics, borders, migration, and identity.

The installation’s rusty iron frameworks conceal vibrant Murano glass bubbles, specially commissioned by Murillo and produced in collaboration with 6:AM Glassworks. These glass elements are complemented by light concrete forms that hang delicately from the metal branches, creating a dynamic interplay of materials and textures.

Flight Drawings reflects Murillo’s ongoing investigation into displacement and belonging, rendered through a powerful combination of craftsmanship and conceptual depth.
